In the spring of 1997 as the band was preparing to go back into the studio to record a self-produced EP. It was during this time they discovered a new soft drink being marketed under the name Surge. The difficult decision was made to change the name of the band rather than have to constantly explain that they are not named after a brand of cola. Surge went into the studio that summer and emerged as Mothergod.
When the album was released in December of that year, the future of the band was starting to look cloudy. The darker more aggressive sounds they were creating were very much masking the emotions not far below the surface.
By the following spring the band had officially parted ways. Mothergod, as it turned out, was not a launching pad to the future of a band on the rise but rather a swan song for a band that had folded under the weight of their own expectations and ambition.
